Learning to drive is different from other kinds of learning such as using a computer. Unlike a trained computer operator, the newly licensed driver is not sitting safely in an office. Mistakes made when driving can have serious consequences.

Quick Tips

  • When approaching an intersection or roundabout always be aware of Trucks sharing lanes as they require more room to turn..

  • Ensure you stay where you can see the truck driver in the truck mirrors because if you can't see them in their mirror, they can't see you!!

  • Allow extra stopping time for larger vehicles when changing lanes in front of them.

  • Check blind spots when changing lanes, merging or parking.

  • Always keep a safe distance when following a vehicle.

  • Ensure you position your vehicle correctly before making turns.

  • Ensure you indicate when exiting roundabouts.

  • Always slow down and drive carefully around school zones & High Density Pedestrian Areas.

  • Always be aware and scan for Motorcyclists.

We all constantly check our blind spots but there is something we should do as well to improve  safety. Do not drive in the blind spot of other vehicles. Either move further up or stay behind in order to be easily seen. Do you trust that other driver to  check their blind spots? Why put yourself needlessly in danger? Stay out of blind spots!

Fixation - Something to be aware of. An example is:                                                         At an intersection one can look left (it is clear) and then look right. But wait, there is a vehicle coming, so we look and wait for it to pass (becoming fixated on that vehicle). As it passes we pull out forgetting to check left again. Meanwhile a vehicle has now come up from the left, and so we have a collision. We became fixated on the vehicle coming up from the right.

When it first rains, especially when it has been dry for a long time, the rain mixes with all the oil and rubber that is on the surface of the road. This results in the road being very slippery and the tyres cannot get a proper grip. The first time you experience this you will be so scared! You will be traveling out of control! Please remember to slow down and leave a larger Crash Avoidance Space. Use smoother steering and braking inputs! Drive Safe! Please!

Another very important thing to be aware of is inattention. How many times do you see where someone has run off the road on a straight section of the highway? Needless! If it is that important pull over or wait until you can.

One of the most important things to do when driving is to "read" the traffic ahead. This gives you more time to react making you a much safer driver.
